Gimmicks

In professional wrestling, a gimmick refers to the alter-ego or in-ring persona of a wrestler. A gimmick may be entirely different from the actual character who plays it. A gimmick is what shapes the character's in-ring behavior, attire, appeal and perceived personality. It serves a narrative purpose and helps the wrestlers maintain kayfabe by giving their characters goals and personality during matches.

Gimmicks tend to be over-the-top and sometimes stereotypical, or at the very least archetypal. Even though there are some commonly used gimmicks, these are always defined by each wrestler to fit their own style. In The SWS, a gimmick goes along with a role, and it usually works as a wrestler's self-given title (or nickname).
